#OTD in 1952, Sinbad, the beloved canine-mascot of the WWII Coast Guard cutter Campbell, passed away at his final duty station at the age of 15. Found on the streets of Staten Island in 1937, this 24-pound terrier became a Coast Guard legend with his shipboard antics. Despite being smuggled aboard in a liberty bag, Sinbad attended roll calls with his lifejacket, had a custom-made hammock and collars, and even his own uniform. In port, he'd enter bars, find an empty stool, and bark for a beer. During WWII, Campbell faced a 12-hour attack by six Nazi submarines, ramming one. Sinbad, Dog First Class, snoozed through it all. Chief Seadog Sinbad retired from the service Sept. 21, 1948, after 11 years at sea. He spent the remainder of his life at the Barnegat (New Jersey) Lighthouse. 🐾⚓️ #CoastGuard #SinbadTheDog #WWIIHistory #USCG
