June 16, 2007 - Operation Marne Torch I begins. This operation was named after Operation Torch, the joint US/British invasion of North Africa during WW2. This offensive was launched against Sunni and Shi'ia extremists in Babil province, Iraq. The mission was to clear terrorist sanctuaries southeast of Baghdad.
