June 15, 1779 - Brigadier General Anthony Wayne captured Stony Point, NY from the British. He said to General George Washington, "I'll storm the gates of hell if you will but plan the attack." The British fort on the cliffs at Stony Point overlooked the Hudson River and threatened West Point 12 miles upriver. Wayne led 1,200 infantry to assault what the British believed was an impenetrable position. Wayne lost only 15 Americans while the British suffered 95 casualties and 472 captured.
