Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. left Harvard before his final year of law school to become an officer in the Navy. He became a naval aviator in 1942 and was soon sent to Britain in September 1943 where he piloted PB4Y Liberator patrol bombers. He served two tours of duty during the winter of '43-'44 and was regarded as an expert. He never took leave and always volunteered for the most dangerous assignments. On the evening of August 12, Joe and his copilot departed from Norwich, England to head to the North Sea coast and prepare for detonation.
