August 16, 1918 - Frank Luke Jr., also nicknamed "Arizona Balloon Buster" engaged in his first aerial combat. Luke was the second-highest-scoring fighter ace during WWI. During his short but distinguished career, he shot down 14 observation balloons and four aircraft in just a few weeks. In September 1918, he is forced down behind German lines after being hit by a machine gun. Refusing to surrender, he is sadly shot, but not before killing 7 enemies with his pistol. #ninelineapparel #frankluke #fighterace #ww1 #WWI #WWIhistory #usmilitary #thegreatwar #army #armyairservice #heroes #usa
