When I had my son, breastfeeding was anything but ‘natural’ for me. I was navigating uncharted territory; no one in my family had breastfed before. Desperate for guidance, I turned to my pediatrician, only to hear: ‘just give formula.’ No lactation consultant referrals, no real help—just told me to quit. But I was determined. So I hit the books, became an IBCLC, and founded Milky Mama, a company aimed at helping moms like me. As I started connecting with more moms, it hit me, I’m not an anomaly. There’s a deep-rooted racial gap for Black breastfeeding moms, contributing to a larger public health crisis. Listen to this: Black Moms have the lowest breastfeeding rates among all racial groups. And it’s not for lack of trying. It’s the systemic racism we encounter in healthcare, the lack of resources in our communities, and generational trauma that put us at a disadvantage. And speaking of formula, did you know that Black infants are nine times more likely to be offered formula in the hospital? Nine times! This is why Black Breastfeeding Week isn’t just important—it’s crucial. For my Black breastfeeding mamas: Vet your healthcare providers. Know what support is available to you and make sure your OB and pediatrician are genuinely committed to your breastfeeding success. For everyone else: If you see a mama struggling, extend a hand, share advice, or just offer some encouragement. We’re a community and we need to have each other’s backs. To healthcare providers and lactation consultants: Examine any biases you may hold. Educate yourselves on the unique obstacles Black mothers face. Be aware that darker skin tones can make conditions like mastitis less visible, but no less serious. Recognize that we WANT to breastfeed. Don’t count us out. This is more than a moment, it’s a movement. Let’s change the narrative, and let’s start now. 🖤✨ P.S. I have a smart mouth and a strong clap back game. Please don’t come in my comments with racism, gaslighting, or attempts to invalidate the experiences of Black women. K thanks, byeee 😘 #BlackBreastfeedingWeek #blackmoms #milkymama #blackmomsdobreastfeed #breastfeeding
