Wafaa Bilal’s (2021 Awardee) “Indulge Me,” a landmark survey of his career, examines the consumption, appropriation, and erasure of culture through performance, sculpture, and interactive technologies. Tracing his practice over the years, the exhibition places Bilal’s work in conversation with broader art histories while exposing the tensions between the United States, his self-described “comfort zone,” and Iraq, the “conflict zone.”  Using his own body as both subject and medium, Bilal explores exploitation and the destruction of cultural heritage, specifically interrogating cultural cannibalism, a process in which the culture of the other is taken apart and repurposed for consumption. The exhibition features a reconstructed room where he confined himself for a month-long performance, images from a camera surgically implanted in his head, and a golden bust of Saddam Hussein to be launched into orbit as a critique of his megalomania. In another work, 3D scans of the Winged Bull of Nineveh sculpture are embedded into the DNA of heirloom Iraqi wheat seeds.
