Burnt Umber, as a shade in itself, is steeped in history… and I know the makeup history mavens among you will enjoy a peek into its story. 'Umber' is a natural pigment derived from the earth—originally called 'Brown Earth.' It is one of the iron oxide pigments commonly known as ochres. The pigment was used for cave paintings by early civilisations hundreds of thousands of years ago and was one of the first paints used by humankind. Like other earth pigments, when umber was roasted, its colour deepened, becoming richer and more intense. In this form, it was known as 'Burnt Umber.' Burnt Umber became a go-to colour for Renaissance artists, as it helped to create a sense of depth. It came into its own with the high Renaissance painters, notably Leonardo da Vinci, who frequently used it for ‘underpainting.’ Later, Caravaggio utilised umber in his ‘chiaroscuro’ technique to create strong contrasts between light and dark, which in turn influenced Rembrandt to use umber in his own underpainting and chiaroscuro. As many of you know, I am always inspired by the history of makeup and colour, and Burnt Umber has held a particular fascination for me—it’s why it was one of the first shades in my Seamless Glide Eye Pencil. I have loved crafting my own take on this historically significant shade… It’s the perfect way to add subtle colour to your eye makeup, and I can’t wait to see how you wear it! Here I’m wearing my Seamless Glide Eye Pencil in Burnt Umber ✏️🤎 #LisaEldridge #newlaunch #mascara #eyeliner #newinbeauty #makeup #beauty #LisaEldridgeMakeup #burntumber
