In December, we left Sydney for Central America. With Koala Eco growing in the U.S., it made sense to be on the same time zone and closer to the US team, but we also wanted the experience. More nature. Inspiration. Life is short. We want to live it deeply and keep challenging ourselves. We started on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, where surfing is part of daily life. Costa Rica is the first country in the world to reverse deforestation. Since 1990, the country has doubled the size of its forests and is protecting 30% of its ocean; this year, the country aims to reach its target of protecting and conserving 100% of its coastal wetlands. After three months, we moved to Nicaragua—a new surf break and a country shaped by volcanoes and lakes. A region of extraordinary biodiversity, Nicaragua has 68 types of ecosystems and 20,301 species of flora and fauna. It’s particularly noted for its marine richness off its Caribbean and Pacific coasts. The boys now speak Spanish easily. Paul and I are still working more than we should, but we’re fortunate to have this opportunity. This chapter reminds us why our work matters and reinforces the values behind Koala Eco. It’s given us more perspective on what we want to carry forward—personally and through the company. X Jess
