Elk is back on the menu for another year at our house. It can be tricky to put it all together during the mid rut lull but a significant temperature drop overnight had this bull and his cows out in the open for first light despite the full moon. Luckily for us we had been up early and hiked way back to be in position on that exact ridge. I spotted one of his cows at first light and Kenneth quickly spotted the bull bedded nearby under a tree. A few moments later as the light got better we confirmed he was a legal 6 which was needed in this zone. Now we just needed to close the distance to get into position. Luckily for us, his cows fed our way and as he followed his cows he closed the gap for us and moved into range. It sure doesn’t always play out the way you hope but if I have learned one thing it is that when you put in the work enough times sooner or later the cards will fall in your favour.
