Ice was in tip top shape in one of the coldest days of the year - single digit temps and one objective, obscure ice, formed within the narrow canyons just above Moab, Utah, deep in the belly of the La Sal mountains. This was a real treat considering it’s not always perfectly formed and the window to climb it is normally short. Learning about the importance and spiritual magnetism of the land from Ellroy Lehi, an Ute Mountain Native American, I garnered a new respect for what the canyons and valleys had to offer. In fact, I embraced his words as a blanket of warmth, keeping me going as I ascended and navigated various frozen water features throughout the canyon. The uniqueness of this ice was astounding, beautifully formed and slithering its way down a smooth sandstone chute. goodr led the way, giving me that extra edge when the cold dampened spirits and aspirations.
