VELA LOG 🔊 [TRANSMISSION 005] “I named her VELA after the star constellation in the Southern Hemisphere. It’s part of a larger shape called Argo Navis — the mythical ship that carried the Argonauts on their journey in ancient Greek mythology. Being lightweight with a well-thought-out design lets us sail beautifully in both big seas and light wind. If it’s blowing 8 knots, we can sail at 8 or 9 knots, which makes for some very nice sailing. In stronger wind, we can do over 20 knots, which is always fun when we’re surfing down waves. I’m definitely not an expert, and that’s a big reason why I’m doing this. I love learning. I love the design and engineering that go into these machines to get us across oceans fast, safely, and efficiently. It’s the same thing I love about surfboards — how shape and fins affect performance. Maybe one day I’ll get a naval architecture degree.” - @john_john_florence
