We came to Bhutan to work with farmers because we heard it was the happiest country in the world. When we arrived, we were greeted by @drtandidorji — formerly the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Minister of Environment (this is him in this video). He was awarded the prestigious Red Scarf by the King, Bhutan’s highest civilian honor, for (amongst other things) his leadership during COVID and his daring rescue and repatriation of 160 Bhutanese women who had been trafficked in the Middle East. Dr. Tandi is a national treasure — wise, gentle, and endlessly kind. He opened doors for us to meet farmers, purveyors, manufacturers and government officials who we would never otherwise have reached. His reputation was legendary everywhere we traveled. He has addressed the United Nations General Assembly advocating for compassion, and human dignity. He has negotiated with some of the world’s most aggressive nations — not through force, but through patience and hope. It’s rumored that he will run for Prime Minister in a few years. If that happens, Bhutan will be guided by an exceptional leader who cares deeply for the welfare and daily joy of his people. Harvey, Gabi, Lucy and I spent more than a week together with Dr Tandi, crisscrossing the country in a small car from north to south, east to west — driving over snow peaks and through fertile valleys, talking endlessly about life, politics, and the way businesses should treat people. Something happens to your brain at these high altitudes. Miles above your daily routine, with your head quite literally in the clouds, things become clearer. Here, high above our own tree line of habits and noise, we saw an example of how things could — and perhaps should — be. Enormous thanks to @drtandidorji for opening his country to us. And to our partners: @bhutanblossoms @mountainhazelnuts @rigsum_honey_cordycepsbt @chokiartschool_ctas @jinlabagroproducts @tshejors and many more. Thank you to @berriosbryan for filming everything. All travel and logistics by @makememoriesbhutan - don’t go to Bhutan without them (but PLEASE go to Bhutan, it will change your life!) Let’s all be just be happy xxxxx Richard
