It saves time to dig a trench if you’re planting a bulb combination in a border. Bulbs can be layered so that they are the correct depth, the bulbs should be planted 2-3 times as deep as the size of the bulb itself. So plant the bottom of the trench with the largest bulbs, then partially fill the trench back in before planting the next layer.
