Red foods are rich in phytonutrient antioxidant compounds such as anthocyanins, tannins, eugenol, hesperidin, ellagic acid, lycopene, and quercetin. They may protect your urinary tract, prostate, heart, and DNA health. One of my personal favorites that my family and I enjoy as often as we can find them is pomegranates. Pomegranates are rich in anthocyanins and ellagic acid which gives the slightly bitter or astringent flavor. Ellagic acid is metabolized by the gut microbiome and the postbiotic produced as a result is Urolithin-A. Urolithin A has been well studied for its ability to stimulate mitophagy - or the enhancement of mitochondrial function in the intestinal cells and is a critical compound for healing leaky gut and reducing inflammation in the body.
