#ArchitectureFriday | Dawson’s Heights represents a bold vision for post-war social housing 🌳 Designed by celebrated Scottish architect Kate Macintosh, Dawson’s Heights offered a strikingly imaginative response to the social and architectural challenges of the late 1960s. Working within the London Borough of Southwark’s in-house architecture department, she set out to create homes that felt both monumental and humane. Constructed between the late 1960s and early 1970s, the estate’s distinctive stepped, zig-zag form follows the natural contours of Dawson’s Hill, maximising light and framing panoramic views across London. Despite tight budget constraints, Macintosh ensured that every flat included outdoor space, with private balconies that cleverly doubled as fire escapes. The innovative ‘streets in the sky’ layout introduced communal walkways reminiscent of traditional terraces, fostering connection and neighbourliness within the estate. Its use of warm, reddish brick softens the bold geometry, balancing a sense of monumentality with an intimate, human scale. 📸 @zizykiss, 2+3: @daveloweee, @brendanpcormier
