How does your garden grow? We spoke to @ross_and_ian, whose garden began with a single rose and has since grown into a space shaped by thoughtful design and a deep appreciation for roses. “Our love of roses started with a single Gertrude Jekyll climber in the garden of our first home. Timeless, fragrant and full of character, it sparked what quickly became an obsession. Since then, David Austin roses have become the heart and soul of our garden. When we moved into our current house in 2021, there wasn’t a single flowering plant in sight. That blank canvas became the inspiration behind our biggest garden project yet. We divided the space into two distinct areas, each with its own character. The Lawn Garden sits closest to the house. It blends cottage-style planting with a more formal layout. We kept the palette muted, the plant selection minimal, and mirrored the borders for a harmonious effect. This garden is home to just two varieties: Emily Brontë, our favourite, planted in groups of three to create lush, impactful shrubs. It begins as a pink bud, opens to blush pink and apricot, and fades to near white - its evolving colour brings constant interest and elegance. Ghislaine de Féligonde, a warm apricot rambler, was added to complement Emily Brontë and now climbs on either side of our moon arch. The Secret Garden - Step through the arch and you’re met with a burst of colour. Deep pinks and soft pastels blend in a bold, vibrant space. Gabriel Oak and Princess Alexandra of Kent pair beautifully with deep purple salvias and nepeta. Curved grass paths lead through borders filled with more David Austin roses. The rich pink Ancient Mariner contrasts with the delicate Silas Marner, trained up obelisks to add height. Along black fences, Albrighton Rambler ties everything together. Wildeve meets the vibrant Boscobel among self-seeded foxgloves and poppies. For contrast and cohesion, we layer in purple and white perennials - penstemons, veronicas, geraniums and astrantias. One dreamy combo: Queen of Sweden rising through clouds of Nepeta ‘Six Hills Giant’.” – Ross & Ian Location: UK #DavidAustinRoses #EnglishRoses #GardenInspiation
