The countdown to the 10th anniversary continues and today we go back to how the unique wildling outsole was born, What looked beautiful on paper became every outsole producer’s nightmare. Too thin, too complex, too many curves. And that gap right in the middle of the sole? "Absolutely impossible!" After a few long, nerve-wracking weeks (with the Kickstarter campaign looming ever closer), we finally received a phone call: “We tried. I’m really sorry, but it’s impossible. That gap in the sole—if you could just close it, we could have the sole ready by tomorrow!” Silence. “Are you sure you need that gap?” More silence. How lucky we were that our path crossed with João C., who saw the look in our eyes and said, “No way we’re closing the gap.” Ten years later, the gap remains open, now with 3 more sole designs in its spirit. "Impossible" became the foundation of everything that followed. 🦊👣 Der Countdown zu unserem 10-jährigen Jubiläum läuft – und heute blicken wir zurück auf den Ursprung der einzigartigen Wildling-Sohle. Was auf dem Papier so vielversprechend aussah, entpuppte sich schnell als Albtraum für jede Sohlenproduzent:in. Zu dünn, zu komplex, zu viele Kurven. Und dann noch diese Lücke mitten in der Sohle?„Absolut unmöglich!“ Nach einigen langen, nervenaufreibenden Wochen (der Start unserer Kickstarter-Kampagne rückte immer näher) kam endlich ein Anruf: „Wir haben es versucht. Es tut mir wirklich leid, aber es ist unmöglich. Diese Lücke in der Sohle – wenn ihr die schließen würdet, könnten wir sie morgen fertigstellen!“ Stille. „Braucht ihr diese Lücke wirklich?“ Mehr Stille. Wie viel Glück wir hatten, dass sich unsere Wege mit João C. kreuzten – er sah den Blick in unseren Augen und sagte: „Auf keinen Fall schließen wir diese Lücke.“ Zehn Jahre später ist die Lücke noch immer da. Offen. Und heute gibt es 3 weitere Sohlendesigns, die ihren Geist in sich tragen. We made many twists, turns, and twills to reach a 100% wool knit (probably a few too many 😁). In the end, we were able to get to 96%, which we’re very happy with. It’s a new way of stepping into that Wildling feeling - the same wonderful touch, with that special something each pair carries. Welcome to the woven family, Mandrill. 🧶🦊 Running wilder. A few years ago, a study examined how footwear habits influence child and adolescent motor skill development, comparing children in South Africa who mostly grow up barefoot—with children in Germany, who are mostly shod (see below) The study was led by Professor Astrid Zech from Jena University. Naturally, we wasted no time and got in touch to learn more, taking the first train to Jena. Meeting Professor Zech was both inspiring and insightful, and we decided to collaborate on an aspect of foot health that had yet to be studied. In the past few years, much progress has been made in this field, and we hope to share the results and conclusions soon. - Prof. Dr. Astrid Zech is head of the Department of Movement Science and Exercise Physiology at the University of Hamburg. She as more than 20 years research experience in sports and exercise science and biomechanics. #ThatWildlingFeeling #WildlingShoes #SustainableFashion #minimalshoes 🦊👣 Vor ein paar Jahren hat eine Studie untersucht, wie sich Schuhgewohnheiten auf die motorische Entwicklung von Kindern und Jugendlichen auswirken. Dabei wurden Kinder in Südafrika, die meist barfuß aufwachsen, mit Kindern in Deutschland verglichen, die meistens Schuhe tragen (siehe unten). Die Studie wurde von Professorin Astrid Zech von der Uni Jena geleitet. Natürlich haben wir keine Zeit verloren und sind direkt in den nächsten Zug nach Jena gestiegen, um mehr zu erfahren.
