Happy Mother’s Day! 💐🥂 I hope you are enjoying your special day today! This mother forgot to plan a post for today, so I hope you can forgive me for a repost 😂 (Technically I’ve added a little to it since the first time I posted it, but still)

Coastal Maine painting done with gouache 🌊💫 I think the rainy weather this week affected the color palettes of my last few paintings 😂 Hopefully there’s some sunny weather this week!

I posted this one as a reel recently, but here’s a look at the process of this painting for those of you who prefer static posts (I’m one of you 😂) Gouache on cold pressed watercolor paper

And by “latest” I mean four parks ago because I’m so behind on posting reels 😂 This one was a little bit of a struggle because I’m still not super comfortable painting rocks and deserts, but I’m slowly getting better at them! This little sunset painting was inspired entirely by the fact that my whole feed is green and blue at the moment 😂 I think I’m overdue for a gouache restock - I’ve been a little too careful trying to save my depleted reds and yellows

The last post I made showing the print vs the painting was a hit, so I figured I’d show off another one! When I edit my scans for prints, the goal is always to keep it as close to the original as possible while also enhancing certain elements. With this print, I made sure to up the contrast and saturation a bit ✨

Shenandoah National Park ✨ I got a few requests for this park after my second batch of paintings that I did - it took me a good year and a half to get around to it but I finally did! 😅 I’ve been into painting waterfalls this past year, but I think this one might take the cake for my new favorite! Painting Channel Islands National Park 🌊✨ This was probably one of my favorite national parks to paint so far! But it helps that I love painting water

I used to use a light pink acryla gouache base layer a lot more frequently - I was feeling a little nostalgic the other week and decided to give it a go again! I always love the peeps of color in the sky ✨ Gouache on cold pressed watercolor paper

My little water study from the other day 🌊✨ This was a tough one to edit because I watched myself soar by the point where I should have stopped 😂 I thought it needed more contrast, but I think I liked the more high key look halfway through. A couple of paintings side by side with their reference images! ✨ I like to share these comparisons every once in a while as a gentle reminder that your painting doesn’t need to look exactly like your reference. I know that sounds like an obvious statement - but it’s so easy to get lost in the details and frustrated when you’re first learning to paint. My best advice is to focus on the painting as its own entity, don’t worry about how closely it resembles your reference. The goal should be to make a good painting, or one step closer to a good painting than you made last time (I thought I had made a few more new comparisons to share, but if I did I can’t find them 😂. I hope you don’t mind some repeats!)
