Ever seen a carabiner that was hollow? We had to put these on the Slacksnap to see the inside. Made by Salewa in late 70s West Germany these carabiners are rated in Kiloponds. 2000 KP = 2000 KGF = 19.61 kN. Slacksnap broke them at 19.49 kN and and 20.68 kN. Rams Horns are awesome! But can you climb above them? Well, kinda yes kinda no. If the horns are at equal elevation, I consider it nowhere near as risky as climbing above mussy hooks, but there is still some chance of one of them unlooping if the rope comes taught from above, and the horn pins, then the rope is slacked, then the stars align and that all happens again to the the other ram’s horn. In this case, you should consider purchasing a lotto ticket. If the horns are offset (different elevations) then it is a hard NO for me. Offset rams horns are a very poor anchor design and have led to several accidents. Even worse are pigtails with a wider/looser turn radius of a larger opening. Avoid placing those and consider replacing them. If you want to climb above the anchors, might as well just do it on the draws, then clean the anchor after. Ring Loading!?!? We pulled apart a bowline loop tied into an alpine runner. Rock climbers tie closed loop bowlines in their slings to create lanyards for clipping into anchors and extending rappel devices. To learn more watch the full episode. V threads are used by canyoneers, cavers, and climbers as a low profile, lightweight and easily replaceable anchor. There are concerns that the bottom of the V will damage the cord. When does it permanently bend ? We wanted to see how much force we could apply to the Lappas Jurassic Tortoise before plastic deformation took place. The Lappas hanger is an improved version of the CMI Bolt Hanger, so we tested that hanger too. They both started bending around 20 kN. We tested both hangers on the Slacksnap utm set to the same settings using the same fixtures. The hangers are rated very similarly. The CMI hanger fully failed at 78% (35.06 kN/44.48 KN) of its rated minimum breaking strength, which is consistant with previous tests we have conducted. The Lappas Jurassic Tortoise hanger achieved 136% (61.60 kN/45 kN) of its rated MBS. We even had to move it to a larger machine to get full failure after the Slack snap UTM pulled it to 44.64 kN. We have tested 100s of hangers and it is normal for the hanger to exceed its MBS by anywhere from 15% to 75%. Why do you think the CMI hanger fails so low? Is sunscreen bad for your rope? The UIAA claimed that it is, even up to 40%. After investigating this, we found no research has been done on this topic and those claims were completely made up. So we tested 9mm Sterling Safety Pro (nylon) with a MBS of 19kN after being soaked in 8 different sunscreens for a month. The two most concerning ingredients according to the UIAA were denatured alcohol and avobenzone, so we tested them in isolation. After 3 samples each, a total of 33 break tests, THE ROPE DID NOT BREAK BELOW MBS ONCE. Watch the Full video on Youtube!
