To peg board or not to peg board?! I am so excited to start this project and get the perfect cozy kitchen for my upcoming renter. But I do need your help. New Substack Post ✨ This week, we all had a good laugh in my stories when I joked about being ahem distracted by a certain teacher's forearms in my kitchen. Despite the distraction, I persevered and finally learned how to properly can — something I've always wanted to do but never felt confident enough to try. Now the possibilities are endless! First up is this Cherry Tomato Sauce, perfect for using up the season's abundant harvest. Serve this sauce as a pizza base, with pasta, over chicken and rice, or even as a dip for your sourdough. The world can be a harsh place, but I’ve always found that if I can romanticize even the smallest, most mundane detail of my life, I can find a bit of magic waiting there for me. So, fall in love with life—again and again. Now, what to do with all these apples? Let’s make an apple crumble. Recipe For the filling: * 6-7 apples, peeled and chopped * 2 tbsp sugar * 1 tsp ground cinnamon * 2 tsp orange juice For the topping: * 1 cup light brown sugar * ¾ cup oats * ¾ cup flour * 1 tsp cinnamon * 1 stick butter, cubed * A sprinkle of salt Instructions: 1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and butter a pie dish or an 8x8 pan. 2. In a large bowl, combine the chopped apples, sugar, cinnamon, and orange juice. 3. In a separate bowl, mix the brown sugar, oats, flour, cinnamon, and salt for the topping. 4. Cut in the cubed butter using a fork or your fingers until the mixture is clumpy. 5. Spread the apple mixture evenly in your prepared dish. 6. Press the topping firmly over the apples. 7. Bake for 50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbly. This weekend find an orchard and pick some apples, make something you love with your hands. Get off your phone and go live life. It's beautiful out there. Where to even begin… This morning, after literally brushing the plaster dust from my sleeves—evidence of another weekend spent in a whirl of demolition and old-house chaos—I felt that familiar tug of stress. Nothing unusual there, given the number of irons I have in the fire…or should I say the number of cast-iron tubs I (with the help of a few very sweet, very strong boys) wrestled out of this house. But I digress. While searching my phone for a photo to send a client, my screen suddenly filled with a flood of images from our recent little escape to The Greenbrier—the last time I can remember feeling truly, completely at ease. Just seeing those pictures slowed my breath. It brought back a quote I once hurriedly tucked into the Notes app: You don’t always need grand plans; sometimes you just need a small staycation, a change of scene, a few new experiences. It’s enough to reset your nervous system. Maybe you needed to hear that today as much as I did. If you’re craving your own reset, I can’t recommend The Greenbrier enough.
