It always came down to what they couldn’t get enough of from food alone—especially under real-world training stress. So I started experimenting. First came EAAs + Glutamine. Research shows EAAs can stimulate muscle protein synthesis even in fasted or depleted states. Glutamine supports immune function and gut lining—two things that break down fast under heavy training loads. Then creatine—which goes way beyond strength. It supports ATP production in high-output work and even has neuroprotective benefits. I’ve seen it keep fighters sharper during high-stress weight cuts and late camp fatigue. Carbohydrates were trickier. I tested dextrose for fast glycogen replenishment, but it alone spiked insulin too fast. Pairing it with Carb10 (a low-osmolality pea starch) gave us sustained energy without GI distress. Studies show it doesn’t trigger the same insulin spike and keeps blood sugar more stable. It became a game-changer for two-a-day training. For soreness and inflammation, I turned to tart cherry extract. Meta-analyses back its ability to reduce delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and improve recovery of strength after hard sessions. Mental fatigue—one of the most overlooked barriers to performance—led me to Rhodiola and Lion’s Mane. Rhodiola has been shown to reduce perceived exertion and improve endurance. Lion’s Mane supports cognitive function, focus, and neurogenesis—especially useful during long camps or when cutting stimulants. And instead of just leaning on caffeine, I included theobromine—a naturally occurring compound in cacao. It provides smoother energy, enhances mood, and has vasodilatory properties that support blood flow, especially in the brain and lungs. None of this happened overnight.
