ON THE ROAD Q&A: It’s difficult to get him to leave the workshop, but once he’s away, you can tell he enjoys being out and about and on the road seeing other makers, vendors, partners etc.

Make sure it’s stuck-stuck! – I’m always looking for new and better way to process work efficiently. Getting good adhesion when bonding layers of leather is very important. This is often done in leather shops by tapping panels with hammer. The tapping (or beating in some cases) from a hammer helps the contact adhesive on each panel form a better bond. But all that hammer tapping can be can be time consuming and tedious - imagine a big 200 mouse pad order - it can also mark up the service of the leather. Pressure rollers like this is an alternative solution I’ve been testing this year. A little prep for the week ahead. I expect we’ll be knocking out a few custom belts this week, and it’s nice to have all the straps cut and ready to go as the orders come in. I typically grab a strap as soon as the an order comes, trim it to size, add notes and and order number on the backside, and add it to the queue so that I can begin working on it as soon as a time becomes available. Most of the belt weight sides of leather we received are strapped out as soon as possible so they’re not taking up a bunch of extra shelf or floor space.
