The “Bookwomen,” also known as “book ladies” and “pack saddle librarians,” were librarians of the “Pack Horse Library Project,” a division of the WPA (Works Progress Administration), a program instituted by President Franklin Roosevelt between 1935 and 1943 to boost the economy by paying people for services during the Great Depression.
