Ceramic meets science in this glowing whale shark. โœจ At first glance, it looks like any of my sculpturesโ€”detailed, textured, and inspired by the ocean. But under the right conditions, it reveals a hidden surprise. The glowing spots on its back are made with a ๐Ÿ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐จ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐œ๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐ ๐ฅ๐š๐ณ๐ž, a special ceramic coating that absorbs light and emits a soft glow in the dark. Unlike surface paints that can wear off, this glaze fuses into the ceramic, making the effect durable and long-lasting. ๐‘ป๐’‰๐’† ๐‘บ๐’„๐’Š๐’†๐’๐’„๐’† ๐‘ฉ๐’†๐’‰๐’Š๐’๐’… ๐’•๐’‰๐’† ๐‘ฎ๐’๐’๐’˜ Fluorescent glazes contain phosphorescent pigments that absorb light and slowly release it over time. After exposure to a light sourceโ€”whether sunlight or a regular lampโ€”the glaze ๐ ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฐ๐ฌ ๐›๐ซ๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐š๐›๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ ๐š๐ง ๐ก๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ before gradually dimming. It can be recharged endlessly, making it a lasting feature rather than a temporary trick. ๐‘ป๐’‰๐’† ๐‘ป๐’‰๐’“๐’†๐’†-๐‘ญ๐’Š๐’“๐’Š๐’๐’ˆ ๐‘ท๐’“๐’๐’„๐’†๐’”๐’” Creating this effect requires careful firing: ๐Ÿ”ฅ ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐ช๐ฎ๐ž ๐Ÿ๐ข๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐  at 1000ยฐC to strengthen the clay. ๐Ÿ”ฅ ๐†๐ฅ๐š๐ณ๐ž ๐Ÿ๐ข๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐  at 1050โ€“1200ยฐC, depending on the glaze type. ๐Ÿ”ฅ ๐…๐ฅ๐ฎ๐จ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐œ๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐ ๐ฅ๐š๐ณ๐ž ๐Ÿ๐ข๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐  at 1000ยฐCโ€”higher temperatures would burn out the glow. While the glowing feature adds an element of surprise, it is Like all my pieces, this whale shark is meant to be appreciated in natural light, where its form, colors, and intricate textures take center stage. The fluorescence is simply an unexpected detailโ€”a small hidden magic that you can share with friends. It wonโ€™t light up a room, but for a brief moment, it can create the illusion of a deep-sea creature drifting through the dark. #ceramicanimals #whaleshark #glowinthedark #oceaninspired #glaze
