For almost 10 years, I’ve made clothing using antique French textiles—from mattress covers to handkerchiefs. Bolts and scraps of French shirting from the turn of the century through the 1970s have always been something I hunt for in markets and estates. The City of Paris series is based on an archive of French shirting sample books dating to the 1930s. These books would have been used in tailor shops and department stores to display shirting options for customers. Each fabric in the collection has been reproduced from an original swatch. They are designated by a “City of Paris” label originally affixed to a formal shirt from the early 20th century.
