A new test piece for hard winter climbing found among the steep faces of New Zealand’s South Wye Valley. On September 14th, @jamesthomas.warren completed the project that began in 2022. Named ‘Negative Space’, with a proposed grade of M12, the route pushes the boundary for mixed climbing in the southern hemisphere. “This climb blew my mind when I first stood underneath it” says James. “Steep and exposed, with a crack running right through the middle of a huge roof. Complete with delicate stein pulls, upside down torquing, and an icy bat hang – it offers some of the wildest moves I’ve ever experienced on a winter route.” #arcteryx
