Venice is a beautiful city and one of the most famous tourist destinations in the world, but it is also incredible because of the science behind its construction—it’s floating on a submerged forest! The city stands on a complex network of millions of wooden piles that have withstood the test of time for centuries. The Venetians drove larch and oak logs into the muddy ground of the lagoon, creating a solid foundation for the buildings. These logs, without contact with oxygen, do not rot; instead, they petrify over time due to the accumulation of minerals. On top of this wooden base, stone and brick platforms were placed, upon which the palaces and churches that make up the city today were built. For example, St. Mark’s Campanile alone rests on 100,000 piles, while the majestic Basilica della Salute required more than a million logs. Ancient builders drove these trees into the seabed, creating a true submerged forest.
