🦌 Nature’s craftsmanship is on full display with the incredible growth of elk antlers. They are the fastest-growing tissue of any mammal and can grow as much as an inch a day while covered in soft velvet. The velvet is filled with blood vessels and nerves that feed the growing bone beneath it giving the antlers their fuzzy look. When the antlers reach full size a ring forms at the base cutting off the blood supply and causing the velvet to dry and die. At that point the elk feels no pain only an itchy urge to rub against trees and bushes to shed the old velvet. The process may look dramatic but it marks the beginning of a new season of strength and beauty for these majestic animals.
