The designers at Studio 7.5 love designing furniture, or as they prefer to call it, “equipment,” as in the tools people need for the work that they do. They find designing office chairs in particular to be most rewarding and have worked with Herman Miller on award-winning seating. Founded in 1992 by Burkhard Schmitz and Carola Zwick, Studio 7.5 approaches the complexity of design problems through collaboration and repeated testing of ideas in full-scale models until the most elegant answer emerges. The designers do all their prototyping in-house, sometimes building 30 or more fully functional prototypes before even sharing the concept with Herman Miller. That approach defined Mirra when it launched in 2003 as a highly individualised work chair built for agile work. It balances immediate comfort and personalised ergonomics in one design. A decade later, Studio 7.5 revisited it with fresh eyes, redesigning Mirra 2 from the ground up, making it lighter, more sustainable, and more refined—without losing its athletic character. Mirra 2 was updated again in 2024 with a nylon base and spine that’s 100% recycled material, further reducing its carbon footprint . In 2018, the designers wondered if they could make a chair that provided immediate comfort without any adjustments. They knew the ideal chair would provide a smooth feeling of natural balance. “You should have a chair that allows you to change postures as easily as possible,” team member Roland Zwick says. “You can only do that with a chair that is correctly adjusted, so we wanted to build a chair that does that part for you.” The result was Cosm, which responds instantly, using a revolutionary self-adjusting tilt and a single suspension textile so the technology all but disappears. “We define not only how the chair looks but how it performs,” Carola says. “Our goal is to enable people to assume roles similar to that of a craftsperson in their shop, surrounded by what he or she needs to be most productive.” Learn more at the link in our bio.
